What is ASCON?

“Ascon” is an abbreviation for asphalt concrete. It is called asphalt, asphalt mixture, asphalt concrete, hot asphalt mixture (Collective Standard), and HMA(Hot Mix Asphalt).
Ascon is an asphalt mixture that is mixed aggregates with asphalt binder and additives. It is mainly used as materials of pavement for road and parking lot, etc. It is classified according to purpose, function and pavement mathod.

Composition and types of Asphalt Pavement
Wearing course
Wearing course is a layer paved on surface course in order to prevent abrasion in cold environment and slip in general environment.
Surface course
Surface course distributes traffic loads to the lower layers and prevents rain from permeating the lower layer. It also provides friction between the tires.
Binder course
Binder course(Intermediate course) is not necessary for pavements but it corrects unevenness of base course and evenly distributes traffic loads to base course. BB-4, MC-1 and WC-5 are used as materials according to the conditions such as types of surface and binder course, traffic, etc.
Base course
Base course supports the traffic loads on surface course.
Subbase course
Subbase course supports the traffic loads on base course. It also improves the durability of pavement by rapidly draining the rain which is permeated through pavement surface and the capillary water from subgrade.
Subgrade
Subgrade is a layer paved on the roadbed. It disperses the traffic loads and reduces the stress effects on the entire road.

Asphalt binder

Asphalt binder, also known as bitumen, is a sticky and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. Various asphalts, such as straight asphalt and modified asphalt, and additives are used depend on its purpose.

Coarse Aggregates

Coarse aggregates are the portion of aggregates retained on the 2.5mm(No.8) sieve. It refers to crushed aggregates, crushed slag and crushed gravel, etc. It should not contain impurities such as clay, silt, organic matter, etc.

Fine aggregates

Fine aggregates are the portion of aggregates retained on the 0.08mm(No.200) sieve after passing through the 2.5mm sieve. It refers to manufactured sand crushed from rocks, crushed stone screenings, natural sand or the mixture of them. It should not contain impurities such as dust, clay, organic matter, etc.

Fillers

Fillers are particles to lower the consumption of more expensive binder material or to better some properties of the mixture. It refers to crushed limestone, potland cement, calcium hydroxide, fly-ash, collected dust and the other mineral powders. It should not contain impurities such as dust, mud, organic matter and mass of particles.
