Incheon Mayor Park Nam-chun visits Seodo Island in Seo-gu, Seo-gu, Incheon, Lee Jae-hyun, and looks around major business sites, including the Seodo Port Fishing Village New Deal 300 project. 2021.12.13/Provided by Incheon City.

Construction of the "Road Expansion Project between Geochumdo Island and Yakam-ri," which accounts for a significant portion of traffic between downtown Incheon and Ganghwado Island, began on the 13th with the aim of completing construction by 2024.

The project section is a 6.47km coastal road connecting Geocheomdo Island in Seo-gu to Yakam-ri (Chodaegyo Bridge) in Gimpo, Gyeonggi-do, and the 4.7km section is a construction that expands from the existing two lanes to four lanes and 1.77km is a new four-lane road.

The project costs a total of 46.6 billion KRW, including 20 billion KRW in state funds, 16.6 billion KRW in Incheon's budget and 10 billion KRW in Gimpo's budget.

The Geocheomdo-Yakam-ri road was a major arterial road that accounted for 90% of the traffic between downtown Incheon and Ganghwado Island before the opening of the second outer ring road (Incheon Gimpo Expressway) in the Seoul metropolitan area. Due to the narrow two-lane round trip, traffic congestion was severe on weekends and rush hour.

Incheon City has promoted road expansion since 2011. Due to the nature of the road used more by residents of Ganghwado Island than by Gimpo residents, it was difficult to discuss the sharing of project costs with Gimpo City, and the discussion on the sharing of project costs was completed earlier this year.

When the road between Geocheomdo Island and Yakam-ri is completed, there will also be a "bicycle path" where you can ride a bicycle from Gyeongin Ara Waterway to Ganghwado Island.

Incheon Mayor Park Nam-chun, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony, said, "When this project is completed, traffic conditions between inland Incheon and Ganghwado Island are expected to improve significantly," adding, "We will carefully and carefully examine the construction."

Mayor Park Nam-chun also visited Seodo Island, the only island in the West, by boat at the dock in the middle of the road between Geocheomdo Island and Yakam-ri. Seodo Island, which is only 1.5km away from inland Incheon but is considered an underdeveloped island, is being promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' "Fishing Village New Deal 300" project to create a tidal flat garden.

Mayor Park said, "It is very unfortunate that Seodo Island, which combines natural scenery, is being alienated due to urbanization and reduction in catch," adding, "We will focus our administrative power on the success of Seodo support projects, including the New Deal 300 in fishing villages."
